This rather featureless disk-shaped animal is commonly seen on some of our Northern shores, on svà bars và sandy areas near seagrasses. Often found in groups of large numbers of individuals, half buried in the sand. Sometimes also seen on the Southern shores. Dead or alive? Svà dollars may appear dead, but they are very much alive sầu. A living svà dollar is covered with fine spines & appears velvety. The skeleton (test) of a dead one is smooth, without any spines, and the details of skeleton can be seen more clearly. The skeleton is fragile và will shatter at the slightest pressure. What eats s& dollars? Some snails such as the Grey bonnet are believed to feed on svà dollars. A Knobbly sea star was seen with its stomach stuchồng to lớn a svà dollar. A Haddon"s carpet anemone was also seen in the process of engulfing one. Kok Sheng also shared a Clip clip (below) of hermit crabs arguing over a sand dollar. Tiny parasitic snails are sometimes seen on them too. |
